| SUMMER ON LONG ISLAND Well, spring-time is fading away and the hot and humid summer is upon us. Time to enjoy Long Island's world famous beaches (and traffic). For the birds, peak migration is over but nesting time is here and all consuming. The birds that we find on Long Island during this time are the ones that nest here and raise young here. We watched courtship displays and mating behavior. Now it's time to watch the raising of young birds. Exhausted parents, and demanding youngsters! What fun to watch the fledglings learning to fly, to hunt, to forage. And just like kids everywhere, they drive Mom & Dad crazy with their insistent and demanding cries to be fed. But "cute-ness" rules the day, and scrawny, downy birds can be found everywhere. Keep your eyes open! Watch for great behavior, parents and young alike, as well as hidden nests holding fluffy treasures. But remember, look-don't touch or stress the birds by getting too close. Enjoy, stay cool... and GO BIRDING!!! |
